Assisi & Spello – Spiritual Legacy, Renaissance Art, and Umbrian Flavor
Immerse yourself in the spiritual, artistic, and natural essence of Umbria with this private full-day journey to Assisi and Spello. Ideal for travelers seeking inspiration, reflection, and connection to Italy’s timeless soul, this itinerary combines sacred sites, Renaissance masterpieces, and unforgettable local flavor — all at a gentle, unhurried pace.
Morning – Sacred Assisi & the Life of Saint Francis
Begin your experience in Assisi, one of the most revered and poetic towns in all of Italy. Draped along the slopes of Mount Subasio and built in rose-hued stone, Assisi welcomes you into its medieval streets, still infused with the spirit of Saint Francis.
Your expert private guide will lead you to the Basilica of Saint Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and spiritual heart of the Franciscan world. Inside, marvel at the revolutionary frescoes by Giotto, which bring the saint’s life to vivid, emotional life — a masterpiece of storytelling and devotion.
Continue through the town’s quiet alleys to the Basilica of Saint Clare, where the relics of Francis’s closest companion are kept. Here you’ll see the original crucifix that famously spoke to Francis, calling him to his path of peace. From the terraces of the basilica, take in sweeping views of the Umbrian valley, bathed in soft light and serenity.
Afternoon – Flowers, Frescoes & Flavors in Spello
Next, your journey takes you to Spello, a delightful hilltop village often called “Italy’s most flower-filled town.” Winding alleys burst with blooms, and Roman gates still mark the entrance to this ancient town with deep roots.
Spello isn’t just charming — it’s deeply artistic. Inside the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, discover the exquisite Baglioni Chapel, where Pinturicchio’s Renaissance frescoes weave biblical stories with grace and elegance.
Following this artistic immersion, enjoy a slow lunch with wine tasting at a traditional enoteca or countryside restaurant. Savor local Umbrian specialties — from aged pecorino and hand-harvested lentils to wild greens and rustic bread — paired with wines like Grechetto, Trebbiano Spoletino, or Sagrantino di Montefalco.
