Waters & Wheels: Rasiglia and the Historic Umbrian Mill
A Journey into the Living Heritage of Umbria
Step into a storybook landscape where flowing water meets ancient craftsmanship, and where grains and threads speak of generations past. This full-day private experience combines the charm of Rasiglia, Umbria’s “village of streams,” with the authenticity of a working stone mill and bakery.
🏞️ Rasiglia – The Village of Living Water
Nestled in a lush valley near Foligno, Rasiglia is a place where clear, spring-fed canals run beside stone houses, under wooden bridges, and through hidden gardens. Once a thriving center for textile production, the village today preserves its traditions with extraordinary care.
As you walk its cobbled lanes with your private guide, you’ll encounter ancient looms, restored wash basins, and water-powered mills. The sounds of running water and the scent of mountain air create an atmosphere that’s almost suspended in time.
🧶 Hands-On Weaving Experience
In a cozy artisan workshop, you’ll be welcomed by local weavers who will demonstrate the techniques once used to produce fabric for aristocrats and farmers alike. You may try your hand at the loom or simply observe the slow rhythm of craftsmanship, learning how threads become stories in the hands of masters.
This workshop is not only artistic—it’s deeply cultural and emotional, reviving a form of knowledge passed quietly from generation to generation.
🌾 Ancient Grains & Living Bread – Visit to Forno Mulino Buccilli
The second part of your journey takes you to a family-run mill and bakery, just a short drive from Rasiglia. Here, ancient grains meet sustainable agriculture, and stone-ground flours are transformed into bread, pizza, and biscuits—baked with patience and love.
Meet the bakers, tour the mill, and (when possible) witness the grinding process or baking itself. You’ll taste their freshly baked products and hear how the family keeps alive one of Umbria’s most precious food traditions.
